Drinking/Process Water Sampling & Analysis
The presence of bacteria and pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms is a concern when considering the safety of drinking water or water used in the preparation of foods. Pathogenic organisms can cause intestinal infections, dysentery, hepatitis, typhoid fever, cholera, and other illnesses. Bacterial contamination cannot be detected by sight, smell or taste. The only way to determine if a water supply contains bacteria is to test it.
CLS provide a range of microbiological testing services for drinking water, process water and ice to comply with S.I. No. 122 of 2014 European Union (Drinking Water) Regulations 2014. Our service includes

- Cryptosporidium Analysis.
Cryptosporidium is a protozoan organism which causes cryptosporidiosis. Cryptosporidium parvum is now recognised as a human pathogen which can cause severe diarrheal illness. Ingestion of drinking water contaminated with viable Cryptosporidium oocysts, the environmentally resistant form of the organism, is the major mode of transmission. Cryptosporidium is introduced into the water supply via animal excreta containing oocysts.
Surface Hygiene Swabs
Surface hygiene swabs provide a flexible method for collecting samples from onsite surfaces. Samples can be collected from items such as kitchen equipment, food preparation surfaces, door handles and even carcass surfaces from abattoirs. Monitoring surface hygiene swabs will assess the standard of hygiene and efficiency of cleaning procedures.

Air Quality Monitoring
Monitoring microbial levels in a process environment should be undertaken regularly to demonstrate an effective air filtration system and good work practices. The process must be rigorously controlled to prevent microbial contamination. This includes not only the processing equipment, but also the processing environment including the air, which may reduce product shelf life, and in certain circumstances, pose a serious hazard to food safety. CLS is certified to ISO 9001:2008 for laboratory analysis, sampling, technical backup, training, food safety programme monitoring and auditing. ISO 17025 is the international standard that specifies the general requirements for the competence of testing laboratories. CLS operates to ISO 17025 and are an INAB accredited testing laboratory Reg. No. 108T. As part of the ongoing compliance to ISO 17025, technical competency and quality systems are audited on an annual basis by INAB assessors.
CLS laboratory staff participate in an extensive range of external proficiency schemes in the Microbiology laboratory. This is an integral part of the quality control system at CLS. Performance in the external schemes is assessed on an ongoing basis ensuring the quality of the test results. Schemes currently being delivered at CLS include Public Health England Food and Water Microbiology EQA Schemes, LGC Crypts cryptosporidium proficiency testing scheme, VETQAS Salmonella in poultry proficiency testing scheme.
